  • Red Tulips

I had just started my painting course when I had the opportunity to accompany my wife to Holland. First stop was the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, an educational and seductive tour, an encouragement to study color and its effect on the perception of reality.

Although I was enchanted by his Sunflowers, I was afraid of dealing with such an important subject, so I chose a simpler subject: a field of tulips.

The difficulty of this painting was to represent the most distant flowers, which in the original photograph appeared blurry and poorly defined.

  • The White Cyclone

In an oil painting it is always better to start with the darkest colors. Correcting a part of the painting where the white color dominates is always very difficult. This was one of the cornerstones of the school of the master Fontanini (for this reason the apples, that is the first painted subject, had a black background). However, I have always liked challenges and so be it! So I looked for a scene where a white horse runs on a snowy expanse. It seemed to me the best choice to test my limits. Too bad that in the first version I completely got the proportions of the neck wrong and therefore the final version (the one reproduced here) is the second edition of the same subject.

  • Cousin’s Cat

This is my wife’s cousin’s cat: Massimo. It’s a photograph of him that inspired me for the plastic pose and the color that is highlighted by the light coming from the left. The most fun part was making the leaves of the plants that could be placed on multiple levels thanks to the work of the spatula.

Here a quick intervention by the master Fontanini gave greater roundness and depth to the segments of the fountain.

  • Marsaxlokk – Malta

Marsaxlokk is a fishing village located in the south-east of Malta. Its picturesque harbor, decorated with colorful boats called luzzu, has become an icon of the island. The Marsaxlokk fish market, held every Sunday, is an unmissable culinary experience. On the evening of July 31, a procession dedicated to Madonna Ta’ Pompej takes place, which is very suggestive.

That evening, sitting in the last restaurant of the walk, we admired the fireworks that light up the black sea and the Maltese fishing boats that are an unforgettable sight. (photo by my wife Luisa)

  • Palmo Mare – Ronchi

In Ronchi in Versilia there is a unique bathing establishment, because it is quiet. Where everyone has their own space and time to think and rest. Where the sun accompanies the beach and the umbrellas in perfect harmony. Everything is slow, rhythmic and elegant in living and respecting. My wife took this photo from our cabin, which inspired me for the light and peace it inspires.

  • Like a feline shiver

I slipped and the bucket was there, ready, innocent and calm.

Now all my fur is soaked in water. It’s as if the freezing humidity penetrated under my skin, a sensation I can’t ignore. The cold shakes my soul, forces me to arch my back and tense every muscle in my body.

    And then, the shiver.

An irresistible impulse runs through me, I shake all my fur, from muzzle to tail, an uncontrolled dance to free myself of this unbearable sensation.

But the water doesn’t disappear so easily. Little drops fly all around.

This painting participated in the SMALL is BETTER! Exhibition – from 14 to 21 DECEMBER 2024 at Arte Spazio Tempo, Campo del Ghetto Nuovo, Cannaregio 2877, Venice.

Curator of the exhibition Gina Affinito, the gallery owner Paolo Bertuzzo and Valentina Recchia, teacher in art therapy at ARTEDO Venice, School of Arts Therapies, for an emotional reading of the works entitled: “SMALL MEETINGS WITH ART THERAPY”

  • Pruning and Rebirth: The Breath of the Vine

In the heart of my garden I planted a Vine, a silent but eloquent companion. Its roots sink into the earth, seeking nourishment and stability, while its shoots stretch toward the sky, longing for light. If cared for with care and by an expert hand, the Vine blooms with surprising generosity: between October and November it is covered in brightly colored bunches. It is a miracle that is renewed, year after year. In December, severe pruning seems like an act of deprivation, but it is only a promise of rebirth. In March, the Vine responds with tears, tears of sap that herald new shoots, tendrils and trembling leaves, a hymn to life that does not give up.

I chose to grow the Vine because I love Wine, that ancient gift that transforms grapes into liquid poetry. It is the nectar that warms the heart and lifts the soul, a bridge between earth and sky. As Don Luca Passarini, head of communications for the Diocese of Verona, said: “It really seems that in Paradise we will drink wine”. And Jesus himself, in the Gospel according to Matthew (26:29), revealed a fragment of eternity to us: ‘I will drink the new wine in the Kingdom of God’.
