  • Nostalgia di Sole

December 2023 – I look out the window and the blinding white light is a solid background that highlights the profile of all the houses that surround me. This Milanese winter erases all the details. I am surrounded by objects cut out from a newspaper and glued onto a white sheet.

Nostalgia di Sole is so strong and harks back to the months of August, where the sky rivaled the sea and a tenacious lifeguard ensures that this enchantment remains safeguarded.

  • Cousin’s Cat

This is my wife’s cousin’s cat: Massimo. It’s a photograph of him that inspired me for the plastic pose and the color that is highlighted by the light coming from the left. The most fun part was making the leaves of the plants that could be placed on multiple levels thanks to the work of the spatula.

Here a quick intervention by the master Fontanini gave greater roundness and depth to the segments of the fountain.

  • Marsaxlokk – Malta

Marsaxlokk is a fishing village located in the south-east of Malta. Its picturesque harbor, decorated with colorful boats called luzzu, has become an icon of the island. The Marsaxlokk fish market, held every Sunday, is an unmissable culinary experience. On the evening of July 31, a procession dedicated to Madonna Ta’ Pompej takes place, which is very suggestive.

That evening, sitting in the last restaurant of the walk, we admired the fireworks that light up the black sea and the Maltese fishing boats that are an unforgettable sight. (photo by my wife Luisa)

  • Palmo Mare – Ronchi

In Ronchi in Versilia there is a unique bathing establishment, because it is quiet. Where everyone has their own space and time to think and rest. Where the sun accompanies the beach and the umbrellas in perfect harmony. Everything is slow, rhythmic and elegant in living and respecting. My wife took this photo from our cabin, which inspired me for the light and peace it inspires.

  • Procida – the mosaic of the Gulf

On August 3, 2022, my wife Luisa and I spent 10 beautiful days in the Gulf of Naples. Naples, Procida, Ischia, Capri and Sorrento. A tour in total tranquility, interspersed with ferry trips, walks, romantic dinners and above all lots of photography.

In the beautiful Procida we were accompanied by APE taxi by Mr. Peppino who helped us discover the most fascinating corners of the island.

This winter I then extracted from my photographs of that day perhaps the most classic one which I then reproduced in a painting, all color and depth.

  • A rainy day is not the same for everyone

This Reuters photo struck me in particular. The renunciation and submission to their own living conditions of these two little girls who work in an Indian dyeworks is disarming. In these countries the working conditions of minors are still the same as those that existed in the West over a hundred years ago. Yet it is here that the wealth and well-being that we enjoy is produced.

Heavy rains have displaced thousands in northeastern Assam state, with no letup in the deluge. Many people have moved to makeshift camps set up by authorities on higher ground [Reuters]

In this painting I partially learned how to drape a fabric (of which the maestro Fontanini is an excellent author) furthermore I tried to represent an intense and bright environment under a light rain that weighs down the clothes of the two subjects and fabrics hanging from the ropes after the dyeing process.

  • Climbing exercise

I took this photo in Lecce during a trip to Salento in 2022. I find the contrast between the colors of the creeper that overlooks the door and the one that climbs up from below along the wall extraordinary. Unfortunately, the photo does not highlight the color well, which in real life is full and transparent. The back wall was done before starting to paint the creepers with the spatula..

  • Like a feline shiver

I slipped and the bucket was there, ready, innocent and calm.

Now all my fur is soaked in water. It’s as if the freezing humidity penetrated under my skin, a sensation I can’t ignore. The cold shakes my soul, forces me to arch my back and tense every muscle in my body.

    And then, the shiver.

An irresistible impulse runs through me, I shake all my fur, from muzzle to tail, an uncontrolled dance to free myself of this unbearable sensation.

But the water doesn’t disappear so easily. Little drops fly all around.

This painting participated in the SMALL is BETTER! Exhibition – from 14 to 21 DECEMBER 2024 at Arte Spazio Tempo, Campo del Ghetto Nuovo, Cannaregio 2877, Venice.

  • The Luzzu and the Colossus

On the slow waves, a luzzu rests,
with the blue that caresses the sky,
the yellow that captures the sun,
and the red that whispers ancient stories.

    Moored at the quiet dock,
it carries with it the breath of the sea.

On the border between dream and distance,
    a giant slips away,
the container ship full of worlds,
    of stacked colors,
shaded like memories that are lost.

And while the small and the large touch each other,
    the sea unites them,
    silent guardian of every journey,
of every farewell, of every return.

  • You will not bend us

Gypsy dance is a whirlwind of emotions, where every step tells a unique and unrepeatable story. In a circus tent shrouded in darkness, the scene comes to life in an almost magical way. The soft lights draw an intimate atmosphere, and the only element that emerges forcefully is the face of a rotating dancer.

Her expression is a picture of breathtaking intensity and beauty. When the music starts, a palpable energy envelops the air. Passion is revealed in every gesture, oscillating between the exuberance of a contagious joy and the sweet melancholy of a lost memory. I cannot see her eyes, but it is her face that captures all my attention, a beacon of emotions that shines in the sea of darkness. Every expression, every movement, speaks of an indomitable strength of spirit.

As if he were shouting to the world: ‘You will not bend us’

I captured this moment on a trip to the Camargue in May 2024 with friends from Rotary Saint Cyr sur Mer.
